Autumn in the Body: Gentle Self-Care Rituals to Nourish You Through the Season

Cozy scene with a lit candle, tea cup, and bowls on a wooden table. Autumn leaves and a garden view through an open window. Warm tones.

These are the autumn self-care rituals I return to every year—to nourish my skin, ground my body, and honour the season’s slower rhythm.

As the mornings cool and the scent of autumn deepens in the air, I start to feel it in my body—not just emotionally, but physically. My skin changes. My shoulders tighten. My daily rituals begin to shift.

In last week’s post, I spoke about the common seasonal changes that many of us notice—dry skin, emotional shifts, energy dips. This week, I want to share how I tend to those changes through simple, nurturing practices I use at home—and how these rituals carry me through autumn, body and spirit.

Essential Oils in the Air

In my home, I use both an atomiser and a traditional oil burner—sometimes it’s just about which one I feel called to that day. A few of my favourite essential oils for this time of year are patchouli, vetiver, cedarwood, sweet orange, and clove—deep, earthy, warm blends that calm the nervous system and remind me to breathe a little slower.

Just having those scents drifting through the air while I move through the day feels like a little exhale for the spirit.

Touch as Ritual: Scrubs, Oils & Self-Massage

Each autumn I make myself a seasonal sugar scrub, using jojoba oil as the base—it’s beautifully nourishing and perfectly suited to the cooler months (though olive oil works wonderfully, too). I blend in essential oils like patchouli, sweet orange, and black pepper for warmth, and sometimes add in dried coffee grounds, which I save from the kitchen. I love the way coffee stimulates circulation and leaves my skin glowing.

Always remember: essential oils must be blended into a carrier oil to be safe on the skin.

After the scrub, I moisturise daily and make time for self-massage, especially around my shoulders and neck. I walk a lot, often on chilly mornings, and I can feel how I hunch and hold tension in my upper back. It’s a simple thing, but touch—especially self-touch—is one of the most powerful rituals I know.

I’ve already booked a few appointments for myself with trusted practitioners, too. Even though I offer this work to others, I still need to receive it for myself—and autumn is a time when my body really calls for it.

Skin Changes & Facial Rituals

My face always lets me know when the season is changing. Around my cheeks and forehead, I start to feel dryness, tightness, and a little flakiness.

So I gently increase my skincare—moving from a once-a-week exfoliation to two or three times. I don’t use grainy scrubs; instead, I use high-quality, pre-prepared cosmeceutical products, usually from the O Cosmedics range.

At night, I press a nourishing face oil into the skin, followed by a rich moisturiser, and I give myself mini facials every week or two—one more cleansing and clarifying, the other more restorative and hydrating. It’s part ritual, part maintenance, and always deeply grounding.

Hydration & Hot Water Rituals

I don’t always feel like drinking cold water in autumn, so I sip on warm or hot water throughout the day—often from a big mug while walking through the garden or pottering in the kitchen. Sometimes I’ll steep a light herbal tea, but just plain warm water is enough to feel comforting and hydrating.

Hair as an Extension of Self-Care

With hair that reaches down to my hips, I’ve learned to take extra care of it in the colder months. I don’t brush it—I gently comb it through in the shower, and I always finish with a few drops of hair oil through the ends to keep it soft and healthy. It’s one of those quiet little rituals that connects me to my body, especially as the days get darker and cooler.

If You’re Feeling the Pull to Nurture Yourself…

This is the time of year to tune in—to respond to what your body is asking for, not just what the world demands.

Massage and facials are deeply supportive through autumn—not only for dry skin and tight shoulders, but also for the emotional body, the nervous system, and the parts of us that are ready to soften.

If your body is calling for support, I’d love to welcome you into The Awen Room. Whether it’s a warming massage, a nourishing facial, or a grounding ritual, your autumn self deserves to be cared for. Appointments are open, and this is the perfect season to book ahead and carve out space just for you.

Next week, I’ll be sharing how autumn invites us to care for our inner world—through stillness, spiritual nourishment, and intuitive rest.

Until then, wrap yourself in softness and take care of your beautiful body.

Blessed be
